Quarterback Controversy

Posted by: Zach

After picking up Matt Ryan with the third overall pick in the draft it’s hard to beleive that there may be questions as to who will be starting under center come September. However we all know how rookie quarterbacks that simply get thrown into the starting rotation usually pan out, need I remind you of Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, Alex Smith, and even out very own Chris Redman when he was with the Ravens.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s obvious that Ryan is our quarterback of the future, but the franchise is currently in a rebuilding stage as a result of the Michael Vick and Bobby Petrino fiasco, as well as cleaning house in free agency. That means it may be some time until Matty Ice is reasy to start, despite the awesome nickname. He may even be ready, but the rest of our team simply is not, the offensive line is undeveloped, there’s a few questions at receiver, and who knows how that defense will stack up.

Mike Smith has this to say about his new quarterback’s first practice, “I thought Matt threw the ball well out there,” Smith said. ” Like anybody competing in their first practice, I think he was a little nervous out there. The command of the huddle was good and I don’t think there were any bad snaps involving Matt. It’s going to be a process for him and he’ll go through it like anyone else. Sam Baker is going through the same thing as well as Curtis Lofton and Harry Douglass. All of our draft picks are going through the same thing. That first day is something they’ll always remember.” From the sound of things Smith may be suggesting that Ryan will be the starter on day one, a mistake I hope not to see.

I really think he’s a bust. I know this will upset you, but I think the only QB who will do well in the NFL is Joe Flacco. Matt Ryan never impressed me.

Hey everyone’s entitled to an opinion. I think he perfectly capable of being a franchise quarterback, he could sure use some help though.

Where is the controversy? Ryan is a good solid young player. He needs a O line around him and to develop and learn the system. The Falcons will have anouther rough year but we drafted really well. ‘08 will go down as a solid rebuilding draft that got potential cornerstones of the franchise. Watch out for Ryan, he will be very good…. in about a year or two.
