2009 NFL draft winners at first glance

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: None Yet

The 2009 draft is over and there were some great picks and some real stinkers but in a draft class that so far doesn’t seem so exceptional I feel a few teams really made the grade.
Seattle Seahawks: If there is a team that really didn’t deserve to suck so badly last year it was Seattle. The receiving corp fell apart and the defense just failed them. Their acquisition of linebacker Aaron Curry was something that no mock draft predicted and it was something that will give the fans in the emerald city something to be happy about. However it is the [...]

Falcons draft Rounds 1-3 thoughts

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: None Yet

The second day of the draft is the meat and potatoes part of the draft and is a make it or break it time for all teams to get the players who, while not being the big names will become the day to day playmakers and future sleepers of the league.
The Atlanta Falcons opened with a great need pick that just happened to fall into our laps in Peria Jerry, a strong and big bodied defensive tackle and “3 technique” that Mike Smith covets. Peria will have ample time to develop and will be in a position to both learn from veteran linemen [...]

Raiders

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The first day of the 2009 NFL draft is over and what a day. The most surrealistic first round ever and the inevitable onslaught of stupidity that is the Oakland Raiders is the high point or low point for me on day one.
The Raiders… What do you say about the enormous pink elephant of ineptitude that is the Raiders war room?
The Raiders were once a proud franchise, they had Kenny Stabler and the John Madden led 70’s squad and Marcus Allen and good solid teams in the 80’s even into the 90’s there was talent. But I see this joke now [...]

Mock Draft Mania!

Team
Pick

1

Detroit Lions
(0-16)
QB Matt Stafford, Georgia
I am not so high on the guy but he does look to have a good arm and I like the school he came from but the Lions need to do something after the 0-16 season so here it is.

2

St. Louis Rams
(2-14)
OT Jason Smith, Baylor
This was Eugene Monroe’s spot to lose and I feel he did. Smith looks to be a safe pick and the Rams need someone to keep Marc Bulger upright.

3

Kansas City Chiefs
(2-14)
LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest
Curry is the safe pick here but with Pioli and the Cassell and now Gonzalez trades I wouldn’t [...]

Dorsey to Falcons?

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

There is a rumor out there folks, one that says that the Chiefs and the Falcons aren’t quite finished setting the NFL on it’s ear. The rumor has the Falcons giving up their 24th overall selection in Saturdays draft for the guy I thought the Falcons were going to pick last year in Glenn Dorsey.
What does this mean? It means that the Chiefs are trying to stock up on as many picks to help themselves rebuild as fast as possible and it means that the Falcons see a very good oppertunity to have two of the top top five picks from 2008 [...]

Tony G is a Falcon and Thomas D is a pimp!

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Atlanta Falcons traded a 2010 2nd round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for a sure-fire future first ballot Hall of Famer and pass catching machine Tony Gonzalez.
Do I like the pick-up? Love is more like it. Tony Gonzalez will provide the pass catching and the leadership that the Falcons will need. Could the Falcons make a better pick-up for this season?
So Thomas Dimitroff was a great GM before but this move elevates him to pimp status. So, Tony G is a Falcon and Thomas D is a pimp!

Tools of the week: The Arizona Cardinals organization

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

I live in Phoenix Arizona and I have been a Falcons fan ever since I was a kid, but even I was rooting for the Cards in the superbowl.  I respected the game they played at the U. of Phoenix Stadium and as I was there I was sad that my team was not victorious but I was happy to see my favorite Cardinal win his first playoff game. That player was and still is Anquan Boldin.

Anquan had me from the moment I saw him play his first regular season fame back in 2003 against the Detroit Lions: 10 receptions 210 [...]

Havey Dahl signs his tender

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: None Yet

It all begins with the offensive line in the NFL and Harvey Dahl is a good solid guard who is coming off of his best season ever. So, when I saw that Dahl signed his one-year tender I wanted to say how cool it is that Harvey Dahl is still a Falcon.  Oh one funny thing, the name Harvey Dahl always reminds me of Bobby Dall from Poison. Does anyone else have this problem? Dall is the one on the far right.

Atlanta Falcons schedule breakdown

AUTHOR: The Dirty Bird | IN: Falcons | COMMENTS: None Yet

The world is officially a better place today now that the NFL has released the 2009 schedule. Atlanta faces a tougher set of opponents and an early bye week and a beast of a stretch from week 7 thru week 11.
Let’s get down to the basic facts and talk some football!
Week 1: Miami Dolphins vs. Atlanta Falcons: The two cinderella teams from 2008 match up in week one at the Georgia Dome to pit Tony Sparano against the man he lost the coach of the year award to in Atlanta’s Mike Smith.
Week 2:  Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons: The NFC South division [...]
