Thoughts on Michael Vick

So tomorrow the Vick saga moves away from Levenworth, KS and the media will turn their attention to Michael Vick and his 2 months of home incarceration and his eventual NFL return attempt.

Dog days

Now let me say that I am not exonerating Vick and I will not defend the man’s actions but I will not condemn a man who has paid his debt to society.

Do I feel that the sentence that Vick got was light? Yes I do. Do I feel that the guy deserves to play in the NFL again? Yes, because in my opinion there are not 32 better QB’s in in league right now or, for that matter the country than Vick.  For those who said that Vick didn’t pay enough for being the ringleader of a dogfighting ring and participating in the killing of the animals need only look at the millions he lost, and although it doesn’t save those dogs it should be considered a measure of attrition.

It is really hard for felons to do anything in this society once they get out. They are continually punished even though they’ve already “paid their debt to society”. It is near impossible for them to get a job, which only helps lead them back to whatever it was that got them in jail in the first place. I’m sure a lot of people think Vick should have stayed in jail much longer than he did but not letting him go back into the NFL would just encourage him to fall back onto what he knows. He’s paid the debt society said he owed. Now let him get back into the real world.
