Offseason Power Rankings: Falcons Rank 10th

ESPN released their official 2010 NFL Power Rankings: Offseason edition and the Falcons find themselves in familiar territory. They finished last season ranked 15th in the poll but open this season in 10th place, only two spots lower than they began the 2009 campaign. They are the fifth in the NFC and second in the NFC South behind the New Orleans Saints who are ranked number one.

In fact, the Falcons are the second-most improved team, moving up five spots. That’s the second-best improvement behind only the Washington Redskins who ended last year at 29th and begin this season 23rd. Last season the Falcons were as high as fourth in the poll after week two and as low as 18th after week 14.

Looking back at the 2008 Power Rankings, the eventual NFC Champion Saints ranked 18th and their opponent in the conference title game, the Minnesota Vikings, ranked 9th. The New York Jets, who would play in the AFC title game, were ranked 23rd. Their opponent in that game, the Indianapolis Colts, were sixth in the preseason poll.
