In the Brett Favre-centric updated power rankings, Sporting News updates the NFC pecking order. They love gun-slinging quarterbacks and agree that the NFC West does not deserve a playoff team. The Atlanta Falcons are fifth but where do they rank in the NFC South?

5. Atlanta Falcons. Favre’s original team has had plenty of ups and downs at QB since it traded him 18 years ago, but it’s in great hands now with calm and collected Matt Ryan.
The rest of the NFC South:
4. New Orleans Saints. It has been a relatively quiet offseason for the Super Bowl champs, and that’s why they’re a bit under the radar. Romo, Rodgers and Favre all played well in ’09, but Drew Brees remains the NFC’s best QB.
12. Carolina Panthers. They’re finally moving on without the “Cajun Brett Favre”—Jake Delhomme—which is stirring up an intriguing bit of QB confusion with Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen.
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Looking for a young passer who captures the spirit of Favre when throwing deep? Josh Freeman is your man.
It’s not a surprise to anyone that most experts are pegging the NFC South as a two-team race. The gap between the Falcons and Saints has been closing every month since February. We’ll find out if there’s a gap at all on September 26.
