Last night, the winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 football, Joe Paterno was fired amidst the ongoing abuse scandal at Penn State.
As events unfolded the last few days it was becoming clear that he had to go, the severity of the crimes and the cover up which ensued, which lasted at least a decade, were just too horrific to let Paterno go unpunished. Whilst at this time it is still unclear how much he knew and what he did or did not do. Pressure from inside and outside the university gave the board of trustees absolutely no choice.
It is crying shame to see one of the most decorated college football coaches of all time go out like this, as he gave so much good to the game. Despite all his past glories on the field, his past inactions off the field have allowed the horror for the victims and their families to go unnoticed and unpunished.
