The Falcons announced Friday, that they have decided to make an adjustment on the 53 man roster. QB John Parker Wilson has been called up from the practice squad to the 53 man roster, to make way the Falcons released DT Carlton Powell.
The move doesn’t make too much sense on the face of it. I tweeted @falconsJAdams to see what the reasoning for the move was and he came back to me saying he wasn’t sure. Hopefully we will find out some more information after Friday Practice.
Calling up a QB, usually indicates an injury at that position. With no QB listed on the injury report, it has created a bit of a mystery.
QB John Parker Wilson, out of Alabama has been with the team for nearly 3 years. The first two on the active roster, so far this season he has been on the Practice Squad after being demoted after the preseason.
DT Carlton Powell, had done a ok job, filling in when Peters and Babineaux missed time earlier in the season. Unfortunately for him he didn’t seem to have that much upside and as a result was deemed expendable by the Falcons staff.
*Update – Minutes after posting it emerged that the Vikings tried to sign John Parker Wilson off the Practice Squad. Vikings OC Bill Musgrave must like his former player, from when he was the Falcons QB coach. To block the move, the Falcons front office clearly liked JPW’s upside enough to promote him to the active roster, in an effort to keep him around.
