In this last game against the Miami Dolphins Matt Ryan did well completing 18 of 26 pass attempts for 220 yards and a touchdown. It’s good to see that even with his time on the field limited Ryan was able to post respectable numbers. The passing attack largely led the offense during this game as Atlanta was only able to muster 69 yards on the ground. This lack of production worries me; Michael Turner rushed the ball 10 times but only gained 35 yards. Is this a sign of poor blocking, a dominant Dolphins’ defensive front, or bad running by the backs? Time will tell, but I believe the Falcons’ ground game is integral to their success in the upcoming season. Ryan did target the backs several times and they were able to gain some yardage that way. Julio Jones led the receivers in yards for the game collecting 90 on 4 catches. I hope that his explosiveness continues to open up the shorter routes and the running game.
The defense played well throughout the game holding the Dolphins to only 6 points on 92 yards rushing and 154 yards passing. I was encouraged by the 2 sacks that the defense was able to make, but I wonder if they were a case of a first string defensive player versus a second string offensive lineman. I hope that the defense continues to be aggressive and can successfully pressure the opposing quarterbacks as the season goes on. Thomas Decoud was able to come down with an interception as well. Hopefully the defense is able to force turnovers this season as well.
