Obviously it’s extremely early in the season. While we’ve only completed four weeks in the season, the Falcons are sitting very pretty in the race for the NFC South division crown. That obviously provides the Falcons a huge advantage through the rest of the season by starting so strong. However, there are still twelve games left to be played.

But let’s look at the situation from a positive view point. Look at the standings in the NFC South through the first four weeks:

1. Atlanta Falcons: 4-0

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 1-3

3. Carolina Panthers: 1-3

4. New Orleans Saints: 0-4

The Falcons have a big time lead on every team in the division. Generally NFL divisional races aren’t decided by more than a game, maybe two. Through four weeks, the Falcons have a three game lead on everyone else in the division, four games on the Saints. Certainly, it’s not an insurmountable lead, but given that the Falcons have a tough post-bye schedule, every game you can gain on your opposition is valuable.

Like was stated before, it’s still really early. But the stronger you play early, the better chances you have in the end, obviously. With five division games left, four NFC East games, and contests against the Cardinals and Lions still remaining, a three game lead now is crucial.
