When Roddy White caught his fourth pass of the game against the Dallas Cowboys, he didn’t just beat Morris Claiborne for a 26-yard gain. He didn’t just break off a huge gainer in a close game. He also set the Atlanta Falcons all time receptions record.
Roddy White came into the game with 570 career catches, three behind the Falcons franchise record holder Terance Mathis. Mathis had 573 catches as a Falcon from 1994-2001. When White caught his fourth pass of the game over Claiborne for the big play, he broke the record and has more catches than any other Falcon had while wearing the red and black of the Dirty Birds.
This was a considerable record. Not to discredit what Mathis did, because he was truly a very good receiver while in Atlanta. He still holds the franchise record for touchdown catches (one ahead of Andre Rison). But Roddy White still has several years left to play, to increase the records that he already has, and to surpass any other Falcons receiving records he doesn’t already hold.
I don’t think there’s any doubt that Roddy White is the greatest Falcons receiver in franchise history. He’s finally living up to his potential, and that’s an awesome thing. For those who have watched him, there’s no doubt, and he’s even changing the minds of people who read in solely on statistics. White has been a fine receiver, will be for years to come, and deserves to be recognized as the great Atlanta receiver.
