Can anyone blame Matt Ryan for wanting Tony Gonzalez to return for the 2013 season?
In an interview with ESPN’s Mike and Mike, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback confessed to the two Mikes that he has been petitioning his veteran tight end to return next season. Gonzalez has previously been quoted as saying that he is ’95%’ sure that he is going to retire after this 2012 season. But just like Falcons fans, Matt Ryan isn’t ready to see one of his favorite targets leave his arsenal.
You’ll have to listen to the interview, but it’s always worth listening to when any Falcon is on a nationally broadcast program. I think it’s clear that Ryan is sincere in wanting Gonzalez to return, but he also realizes that Gonzalez would have to consider his current family situation, what is best for them, before making a decision to come back for the 2013 season.
There’s no doubt Gonzalez is capable of returning next year. The 36 year old wonder registered 93 catches for 930 yards and 8 touchdowns, and continued to consistently move the chains, as well as be a dominant target in the red-zone.
I wouldn’t count on Gonzalez returning for next season. Then again, I wouldn’t count him out either.
