Falcons Improve Running Game By Signing Steven Jackson

Just when everyone thought that the Falcons were being very quiet in free agency, they shocked us all with signing the top running back on the market in Steven Jackson.

The Falcons released starting running back Michael Turner due to a downfall in his production. He went from rushing for 1,340 yards in 2011 to rushing for 800 yards in 2012. He also went from 4.5 yards per carry in 2011 to 3.6 yards per carry in 2012.

Jackson should improve the running game for the Falcons. He has been one of the leagues top running backs since he entered the league in 2004. He also provides the workhorse attribute that many running backs at his age don’t provide.

However, Jackson will unlikely be the workhorse type of back he was in St Louis with the Falcons because they do have a young running back with Jacquizz Rodgers. Rodgers will be a big factor in Jackson’s success with the Falcons because he will give him good field position in games with his explosive runs and give him rest, keeping his legs fresh through out games.

Speaking of Rodgers, this should benefit him too. He will be learning from one of the greatest running backs ever.
