Well, it’s official. Tony Gonzalez will not be wearing an Atlanta Falcons uniform next fall, because he will be wearing a suit and tie on the set of The NFL Today as an analyst.
Gonzalez has always been comfortable in front of the camera and a career in the media is no surprise for a future Hall of Famer who is articulate and bright. And, as his comments about Matt Ryan in a recent ESPN the magazine article show us, he isn’t afraid to speak his mind and tell it like it is.
There had been rumors starting to swirl after that interview came out that he wasn’t ready to move on, and could in fact be eyeing another year in the NFL. One of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game, he left the league still chasing an ever-illusive Super Bowl ring.
But, we now know that instead of playing football next year he will be talking about it for CBS. It’s a good gig to have for a former player, it pays well and you don’t really have to say too much.
Gonzalez will be great as a studio guy, and will represent CBS as well as he did the Falcons for so many years. I’m sorry that he won’t be in an Atlanta jersey next fall, but glad he’ll still be part of the football experience.
