Atlanta Falcons wide receivers dealt double dose of tragedy

For the second time in two weeks, a brother of a star Falcons wide receiver has been shot.

Julio Jones’ brother, Phillip, was shot in the arm in Gulf Shore, Ala. Roddy White’s brother, Tyrone Moore, was shot and killed in Charleston, S.C., last week. Phillip Jones had his arm amputated as a result of the gunshot. Suspects have been arrested in both incidents, and the shootings are not related.

White and Jones — one of the most dynamic pass catching duos in the league, endured a tumultuous 2013 thanks to injury. From a simply pragmatic standpoint, Falcons faithful have to wonder what effect these two tragic events will have on the 2014 campaign.

Jones and White both are physical beasts and can no doubt overcome last season’s injuries. The next hurdle, from a fan standpoint, is if they can overcome emotional ones as well. Football is important to us here at Blogging Dirty, but we must keep perspective. Our thoughts are with both families as they overcome these tragedies, and hope that, if there is a gridiron silver lining, it’s that life on the football field can be a much needed distraction for two of the game’s most talented players.
