In 1966, the Atlanta Falcons debuted with their bright red helmets and the familiar logo that was the first thing that taught me I would never be an artist. I spent hours trying to draw the Falcons logo, and it always came out looking like a rather abstract duck.
But that’s a different story for a different day. In 1990, the Falcons switched to the black helmet and, save for a few retro games, the black helmet has been the standard ever since.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s as a diehard Falcons fan, so the red was all I knew as a kid. When they switched to black, I had a hard time adjusting, but decided it might bring a certain toughness and swagger to a team that could use it.
What say you? Do you like the current black? Or should we go back to Grits Blitz red?
