Atlanta Falcons: Three Players in Pro Football Focus Top 101

A lot of focus has gone to the NFL’s Top 100 players list, but Pro Football Focus have just wrapped up their own, which you can find here. Three Atlanta Falcons were selected in the top 101 players of 2014.

The PFF list takes into account only the 2014 season, so any achievements before then are irrelevant. It’s based solely on who performed, and who didn’t, last year.

It also isn’t judged on each player’s PFF grade, but takes into account their statistics and overall performance on the field. Each position is equal, so a quarterback won’t rank higher because the position is more important.

Here are three Falcons who made the top 101:

53. Julio Jones, WR
57. Matt Ryan, QB
80. Desmond Trufant, CB

On a team that disappointed, these three were certainly the standout performers. Ryan and Jones were the stars on offense in a passing game that ranked fifth in the NFL.

Trufant was a rare bright spot on a defense that finished dead last. Up front, the Falcons couldn’t get any pressure on the quarterback, but Trufant was solid in his role in the secondary.

With Dan Quinn in charge, we can hope to see more Falcons on this list next year. Maybe first round draft choice Vic Beasley will make a strong first impression and earn a slot. Maybe running back Tevin Coleman will impress as a rookie and feature.

The new additions could also help the three players who are already on the list.

Jalen Collins could bolster the secondary, which in turn might help Trufant reach an even higher level. Justin Hardy will give the Falcons another passing threat, which could give Jones more opportunities.

What do you think of these rankings? Do you agree with the placings of the three Falcons?

Should they have been higher? Or dare I say it, lower? Let us know what you think.
