Should Atlanta Falcons go after Danny Trevathan in free agency?
One of the hottest names on the free agency market is Danny Trevathan. Should the Atlanta Falcons make a move?
There’s a strong chance linebacker Danny Trevathan becomes a free agent due to the Denver Broncos’ salary cap situation. If he does indeed hit the market on March 9, should the Atlanta Falcons attempt to lure his signature?
It won’t come cheap, as is the nature of players on Super Bowl winning teams. That’s particularly true when the player was a key part of the league’s best defense, a unit that dominated Tom Brady and Cam Newton on its way to a championship.

But the best players don’t come cheap.
The Broncos currently have around $7.36 million in cap room. That number could increase by $19 million should they part ways with Peyton Manning.
But here’s the issue for Denver: Von Miller is in line for a huge payday after a dominant 2015 season that ended with him earning the Super Bowl MVP award. If a long-term deal hasn’t been agreed between Denver and Miller in the coming weeks, the Broncos may designate the franchise tag on him.
If Manning departs, which is highly likely, the Broncos will need to make a decision about their quarterback situation. Brock Osweiler is a free agent, and it won’t be cheap to re-sign him. If they look elsewhere, signing a quarterback will eat into their limited cap room.
With the other priorities this offseason for the Broncos, there’s a realistic chance Trevathan gets paid somewhere else.
Trevathan could help the Falcons in a number of ways. First off, he can drop into coverage, something Atlanta are in desperate need of. Trevathan is an every-down inside linebacker and is the complete package.
He can apply pressure to the quarterback, cover tight ends and has high football intelligence. There’s not much Trevathan can’t be asked to do, which is what makes him such a talented player.
At just 25-years-old, he is entering the prime of his career and would be an excellent piece in Dan Quinn’s rebuild of the Atlanta Falcons defense.

His price will rise due to his performances in a Super Bowl-winning team. Even before Denver played a playoff game Trevathan was considered one of the top defensive free agents. But his price tag won’t break the bank to the extent the Von Millers, Alshon Jefferys and Muhammad Wilkersons will.
