Where does Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman rank in the NFC South?

There is plenty of talent on offense in the NFC South, particularly at the running back position. The Panthers have relied on their running game to power their offense, and the Falcons have become more reliant on their running backs since Dan Quinn became head coach.

With a young quarterback in Tampa Bay, the importance of running the football is key. And while the Saints have a pass-happy offense led by Drew Brees, Mark Ingram has been able to carve out a number of excellent performances on the ground.

But when looking at the four starters on the ground — Freeman for Atlanta, Ingram in New Orleans, Jonathan Stewart for the Panthers and Doug Martin the Buccaneers — who stands on top? Let’s work our way through from No. 4 to No. 1.

A year ago this list would have looked a lot different. Freeman had done very little as a rookie and the Falcons had drafted another running back. Martin has put together two disappointing seasons and Stewart couldn’t stay healthy.

A lot has changed. Let’s work our way through the running backs in the NFC South.
