In preparation for the Divisional Round of the playoffs, the Atlanta Falcons have released their weekly injury report.

This injury report is fairly short, but it’s got several big-name players, and all of them are defensive.

Safety Charles Mitchell and cornerback Chris Owens were both held out of practice dealing with calf and hamstring injuries respectively. That’s certainly not good, but Mitchell has barely seen the field, and I think first year Falcon Robert McClain is actually a better nickel corner than Owens. He’s played more. But I am concerned what happens if the Seahawks are to like up 4 receivers. The Falcons don’t really have much of a 4th corner outside of Owens.

Corner Dunta Robinson suffered a head injury in the Falcons last game against Tampa Bay, but he saw full practice participation today. He should be good to go for the Falcons tomorrow. You should check out this piece by fellow Blogging Dirty writer Sergio on Robinson’s value to the Falcons.

Strong safety William Moore saw limited practice. I’m concerned about his availability against Seattle. He missed the final four games of the regular season, and while his hamstring seems to be healing significantly, who knows if he’ll really be ready physically to go. And who’s to say whether he’ll be prepared for game speed. Everyone else has been playing week in and week out, and Moore has missed lots of time.

The final member of the injury report is defensive end John Abraham. He saw limited practice today as well. He’s probably the most veteran player on the Falcons (outside of Tony Gonzalez). If anyone is sure of how their own body works and won’t play if they aren’t physically capable, Abraham is that guy. He’s seen limited practice several times this season. If he’s not ruled out for the game at some point this week, then he’s going to play. I think it’s as plain and simple as that.

Keep an eye on Blogging Dirty for the injury situation as the week progresses.

It’s the time of the week to once again take a gander at the Atlanta Falcons injury situation going into their Week 17 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The list looks similar to last weeks injury report. Defensive tackles Corey Peters and Jonathan Babineaux both saw limited practice Wednesday and today while dealing with knee and rib injuries respectively. They are almost shoe-ins for Sunday’s game. The only question that remains is how long they will remain on the field with the replacement of starters being a realistic thought.

Four other players were listed on the injury report today. Those are defensive end Cliff Matthews, safety William Moore, cornerback Chris Owens, and receiver Roddy White. I would never count Roddy out of a contest, as he hasn’t missed a game due to injury in his entire professional career. Mike Smith may remove him from the game sooner than most of the starters to ensure he doesn’t do any real damage to his knee, but I wouldn’t worry too much about ‘Rowdy’ Roddy White.

The same cannot be said for William Moore, Chris Owens, or Cliff Matthews. Moore hasn’t played since Week 13, and I don’t think the Falcons will be in any huge hurry to bring him back in a meaningless game against the Bucs and risk him further injuring his hamstring. I think it’s a safe bet Moore doesn’t dress for the game.

Chris Owens was on the injury report last week, and I didn’t see him on the field in Detroit last week. He’s gotten to the point that he’s a very solid defender as a cornerback in nickel situations, but the Falcons don’t lose too terribly much by not having Owens active. They have young CB Robert McClain who has shown he can play very well on the biggest of stages, and can fill in seamlessly (or has to this point) for Owens. It’s nice that the Falcons have some decent depth at the position for once.

Cliff Matthews has played sparingly this season. He has six tackles in limited action on 9 games. Missing him on Sunday won’t be a huge factor, if he truly is inactive.

It’s time to look, yet again, at the Atlanta Falcons injury report. It’s near the end of the season, so naturally there list of players is significantly longer than early in the season. Use this link here to read the official Falcons injury report.

Jonathan Babineaux, Tyson Clabo, Harry Douglas, and Chris Owens all saw limited practice snaps. I wouldn’t be too terribly concerned about them seeing practice snaps; they will probably fully practice by the end of the week, and will likely play against Detroit. Really, no true worries.

Three players did not practice today. Those players are Roddy White (knee), Cliff Matthews (hamstring), and William Moore (hamstring). White played last Sunday after barely practicing all week long, and did some really good things. He hasn’t missed a game in his career. If Matthews is out against Detroit, it’s not a huge deal either. He has really played sparingly, in a rotation, and hasn’t even played in several games. Not to sound callous, but it’s not a huge deal if he’s not ready for Saturday’s game.

The real question mark is strong safety William Moore. Moore has been outstanding all season long, and his last action was in the Falcons victory against New Orleans where he had two interceptions. Since then, he hasn’t practiced one bit, as far as I know. It’s a bit of a concern at this point. I don’t want to rush him back to practice too quickly and have him re-injure that hamstring. On the other hand, I’d like to have him back in time to make a difference int he playoffs, and if he hasn’t played in the last 4 or 5 games of the regular season, he probably shouldn’t be thrown into game-speed situations. The amount of time Moore has been out is becoming a bit of a problem for the Falcons, one that hopefully will be resolved shortly.

If Moore isn’t ready to go, safety Chris Hope will fill in for him. Hope had a great game against the Giants, primarily in run support.
