Round 2, 61st overall (from Arizona): SS Darian Thompson, Boise State

Remember that extra second-round draft pick I was referring too? Well, here it is and it will be used on strong safety Darian Thompson. The Falcons already addressed both the pass rush and the weak side linebacker position in this mock draft so using their next pick to fill the void at safety only makes sense.

It was reported earlier this week that the Falcons had not one, not two but multiple scouts and members of the team on hand to watch Thompson workout at Boise State during his pro day. And when you send that many people to the other side of the country to watch a prospect closely, you know right away that he is very high on their draft boards.

Thompson is 6-foot-2, 208 pounds and put on a show at the Senior Bowl. He’s a risk taker and that paid off in his college career. He picked off 19 passes while at Boise State which set a conference record and he isn’t afraid to lay the wood on a ball carrier either.

Scouts view Thompson as a box safety but don’t sleep on his coverage skills. With a player such as Cravens playing in front of him acting as a box safety, Thompson will be able to roam around more in the secondary and take some chances. He isn’t the best cover safety in the draft, but with a little work with Dan Quinn, he could turn into a really good player.
