Three veterans the Atlanta Falcons should sign to one-year deals
Jacoby Brissett – quarterback
There is an NFL quarterback shortage and teams tend to overpay for them.
However, the days of Jacoby Brissett making $15million a season are long gone, however, that does not mean that he isn’t worth bringing in to be a backup to Matt Ryan.
He has not started a game in the NFL since he led the Colts to a 7-8 record as their starting quarterback in 2019. He spent 2020 as the backup to Philip Rivers and saw action in 11 games, attempting just eight passes.
Brissett is another one of those guys whose ego is going to take a big hit when he realizes that the only market for him is as a backup quarterback and the payday is going to look a lot different than his first five seasons.
With the retirement of Matt Schaub and the Atlanta Falcons cutting Kurt Benkert, Matt Ryan is the lone quarterback on this roster.
We have seen just how smart teams are for having intelligent and capable backups and this is the Falcons’ opportunity to do just that with a player that is still under 30 years old and has started 30 games in his career.
Jacoby Brissett needs a team and the Falcons need a capable backup quarterback who won’t break the bank given their cap woes. If they can make the money work, this seems like the right pathway to explore for 2021.
