1. Atlanta is willing to spend to improve at quarterback but not to protect the quarterback?

If you’re Matt Ryan you don’t need any other reason to demand a trade besides pointing out who led the league in quarterback hits taken. Add in the fact that Atlanta willingly lined up a liability in Jalen Mayfield at guard and who could blame Ryan for wanting out?

When you’re rebuilding it is easier to swallow one tough season of a lack of protection. However, Atlanta isn’t rebuilding if they are willing to spend their future for Deshaun Watson. Where was this energy when Ryan was being used as the league’s punching bag?

The Colts and Steelers are both teams capable of protecting Ryan and would give him a much better chance to win right now without taking punishment every other snap. The optics of Atlanta allowing the franchise icon to take so much punishment and failing to provide him any type of upgrade early on this off-season speaks to where their focus is.

Ryan should go to a team capable of pass blocking long enough to allow him to throw the ball past the line of scrimmage. Whether it was using his legs or taking a hit to deliver a pass Ryan put together one of the gutsiest seasons we have seen from any quarterback. Atlanta repays this by looking in another direction and still failing to improve a terrible offensive line.
