Davis, Wire and Lewis Headline Latest Roster Cuts

The first round of serious roster cut downs have taken place in the past few days. The most notable name that the Falcons have cut recently is DE Chauncey Davis.

Davis, who was carrying a substantial salary cap number heading into the season, was deemed surplus to requirements in Atlanta. Alongside the large salary, the impressive preseason play of 7th round rookie DE Cliff Matthews, UDFA Emmanuel Stephens and of course, the free agent signing of Ray Edwards. Despite Davis having a fairly decent preseason, it came down to financial implications and really the Falcons made the sensible decision.

The release of LB Coy Wire, the inspirational linebacker must have been a difficult decision for the Falcons organization to make. Although his intangibles are still very strong, his age was starting to catch up with him and that could be seen in his play. With Akeem Dent, coming in with a middle round draft pick against his name and the surprising strong play of the versatile Spencer Adkins, Coy Wire abilities were no longer required. Look for OLB Sean Weatherspoon to take on a bigger leadership role this season and become the true leader of the linebacker core.

Defensive Tackle Trey Lewis, flat out has not been performing of late. He looked very weak against the run last week against the Steelers, that is a major concern for him as he brings very little to the table in terms of pass rush. The Falcons obviously felt there were better options out there, do not be surprised if the Falcons bring in another Defensive Tackle in the coming days.

Other notable cuts included WR Brandon Harvey, RB Gartrell Johnson and LB Bear Woods.

What do you guys think about these cuts? Who should have gone? Who should have stayed?
