FB: What will the Buccaneers need to do to beat the Falcons this year?
JU: Last year the Bucs lost the two meetings by blowouts: Week 3 56-14 and Week 10, 27-17. Thank you Julio Jones. Jones combined, in both games, 17 catches, 280 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
This year is obviously a different story, I hope.
The Bucs have to disrupt routes and contain Jones enough for the defensive line to get to Matt Ryan. Not an easy task when you have Roddy White on the other side to account. On a positive note, Mike Evans had a great game in the second meeting of these two divisional rivals; 7 catches, 125 yards, and 1 TD.
I won’t be surprised if this game comes down to a shoot out and the last team to score wins.
FB: I personally wouldn’t mind a repeat of last year. What do you think the Falcons need to do to win both games?
JU: The Falcons will get a nice look in Week 7 what Jameis Winston is all about and his habits. However, by their second meeting, I expect Winston to be a step ahead of the Falcons. By Week 12, the Falcons will have to monitor Mike Evans and the always-dangerous Vincent Jackson. The Falcons will want to control the ball and keep it out of the trios’ hands.
FB: Finally, is Jameis Winston the long-term answer to bring success in Tampa Bay?
JU: Yes, Winston is a long-term answer. He is part of the big answer, which includes 2nd year wide receiver Mike Evans and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
If all three can stay healthy and on the field, that being said out of trouble, the Bucs will have many glory years to come.
Before joining the Buccaneers, Tampa Bay General Manager Jason Licht was part of a Patriots front office staff, which sought the draft to rebuild a team and add from free agency to compliment Sunday’s game plan. Licht drafted Winston understanding that the franchise not only needed a player for a year or two; but for many more years to come and to build around.
Thank you to Jesse for taking the time to talk to me. We hope to speak with him and other members of The Pewter Plank’s great staff throughout the season. If you ever feel like scouting the division rivals, The Pewter Plank is one of the web’s top destinations for Bucs views.
