What to watch

First taste of Dan Quinn’s defense

The words ‘fast and physical’ have been echoed by Dan Quinn throughout the offseason, and we’ve seen promising performances in preseason by the defensive unit, but now we’ll see just how they fare against one of the league’s premier offenses. Philadelphia plays fast and there a number of playmakers to be concerned about. If this defense can find a way to slow down the Eagles, we can begin to get excited.

The run game

A problem seemingly every year with the Falcons is the inability to run the football. Devonta Freeman is set to return from a hamstring injury that wiped out his preseason, but it will be rookie Tevin Coleman to start in the backfield. Coleman rushed eight times for 56 yards in the final preseason game and looked strong, and the Falcons will need to run the ball well to win this game.

How’s that o-line shaping up?

Against the Dolphins, the offensive line was taught a sobering lesson. They need to perform at a high level this season to keep Matt Ryan upright and help out in the run game. This will be the first test of this line, which will feature Jake Matthews, who was a doubt due to a back injury.
