The offenses

Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan constantly stressed the important of balance on offense in the offseason, and they meant it. Improvements to the run game were to be expected, but not many predicted this.

The Falcons own one of the league’s most dangerous offenses when fully healthy. Defenses must pick its poison: Devonta Freeman or Julio Jones? Stack the box to take away the run and Jones will expose the clearer passing lanes and burn secondaries. Sit back and invite the run and Freeman will carve a defense open on the ground.

The same can’t be said in Tennessee. It was always going to take some time for everything to settle on offense, as is the way with a rookie quarterback and many new young parts. The Titans have a lot invested in their young passer and first-year receivers and linemen.

A player we haven’t been able to see is running back David Cobb, selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft. He’s currently on short-term injured reserve, and will be eligible to return in Week 9. For now, the Titans offense is struggling.
