The defenses

Believe it or not, the Falcons’ losing run hasn’t been because of its defense. In fact, the defense has been a strength in recent weeks. The unit allowed 17 points last week against the Colts, with a costly pick-six from Matt Ryan handing Indianapolis a way back in.

The unit held Tampa Bay to 23 points, but the Bucs scored four times after turnovers. Before the bye, the defense kept the 49ers in check, allowing just 17 points. But the Falcons lost all three, and it’s due to the play on offense. The Falcons’ last victory, a 10-7 win over Tennessee, was won by the play defensively.

Strong defense is far less surprising in Minnesota. Mike Zimmer has done an excellent job in turning the fortunes of the Vikings defense around. He inherited a mess and has turned it into a force, and finding a way to score past them will be key.

The Vikings are excellent against the pass, but teams have been able to run the ball against them at times. The Falcons will need Devonta Freeman back on the field to give him an opportunity to expose any holes in the Vikings’ front-seven.
