6. Beware the deep ball

How many times this season has Cam Newton stepped back and thrown a lightning deep ball down field and connected for a huge gain, or even a touchdown? It was a key to defeating the Seahawks late in Seattle, and we saw Newton do the same against the Packers and Saints.

Newton’s passing is called into question at times, but make no mistake, if he sees a matchup he likes downfield, he isn’t afraid to fire a rocket which can burn secondaries deep. The Falcons must be aware of the deep ball, and that starts by generating some pressure up front to force Newton to release the ball quicker.

5. Beware Cam Newton the runner

One of Newton’s most dangerous assets is his ability to take off and run. Unlike a Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers who are effective runners but always look to throw the football first, Newton has a lot of designed run plays.

His size, strength and speed makes him tough to tackle, which is why he is so effective on third-and-short. Newton often powers forward, lowers his shoulders and forces his way over the first-down marker. When Newton gets going, he essentially becomes an extra running back.

The Falcons must have an answer for his mobility.
