CB Leodis McKelvin

Last year, the Falcons chose to take Jalen Collins in the first three rounds as they bought into what most pundits were saying that he was an NFL type corner. Though it has been a rather small sample size, Collins looked lost when he was on the field more often than not, and that third cornerback should be one of the “must haves” for the Falcons this free agency period. They needn’t look much further than former Buffalo Bills talent, Leodis McKelvin, who is entering the twilight of his career.

McKelvin at one time was a solid, shut-down corner who made a name for himself on special teams in punt returns. And, though the Falcons would not be signing McKelvin at the prime of his career, he is a name worth watching during free agency because of the leadership that he will bring to the defensive side of the ball. It is that ability alone that should make McKelvin an incredible piece for the Falcons.

With Robert Alford approaching the end of his rookie deal, the Falcons will look to stop-gap the loss of the starting cornerback. If the Falcons could bring in a veteran to come in and help grow Collins into the player he could become, Atlanta should do so. If all else fails, McKelvin may become a starting safety for the defense searching for answers at that position, too.
