Reports surfaced Thursday evening that former Atlanta Falcons’ outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon was headed to the dirty south to have a sit-down dinner with head coach Dan Quinn and see if they could come to terms in a contract.

It didn’t take very long before the deal was complete.

Weatherspoon signed a 1-year contract with the Falcons according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and that was confirmed by Falcons’ beat writer Vaughn McClure shortly after.

Signing Weatherspoon to a 1-year, prove-it deal makes a ton of sense. He possesses that speed factor from the outside linebacker position and is a high-energy guy. Weatherspoon or known by the Falcons’ fan base as “spoon” was a fan-favorite in his stent wit the team and the chatter has already erupted about how excited everyone is about this deal.

Quinn reported that he had hoped to re-sign Weatherspoon in 2015 but was unable to. Weatherspoon signed a 1-yer deal with the Arizona Cardinals instead but all of that is in the past.

What will hopefully remain in the past is Weatherspoon’s injuries. He played in just seven games in 2013 with after battling through a sprained foot and missed the entire 2014 season with a torn Achilles. He also missed some time with an injured hamstring last season which ultimately cost him a starting job.

At the age of 28, there is still time for Weatherspoon to rejuvenate his career. He may never get back to the level that he played at in 2012 were he racked up 115 combined tackles, four sacks and recovered a fumble but anywhere close to that would be a huge success.

There is literally no risk involved in this deal. If he were to get injured again, the team wouldn’t lose much money and the leadership and energy he brings to the team is what makes him so appealing.

This is a great signing for the Falcons.
