Growing a team into a contender is dependent on several factors, one of which is drafting well, and not just in the early rounds. There have been great players drafted in the later rounds of the NFL draft, so it is about starting strong and finishing even stronger. You don’t expect guys to come in and win starting jobs right away when drafting them late, but you expect them to be able to come in and develop into what can hopefully be a serviceable player for your team one day.

The Atlanta Falcons have struggled in recent years to draft players past the 5th round who have been steady contributors, but that doesn’t mean they are not out there. Take a look at some of the later round draft picks who have been drafted recently:

  • Antonio Brown – 6th round
  • Charles Clay – 6th round
  • Alfred Morris – 6th round
  • J.R. Sweezy – 7th round

That list includes one of the best Wide Receivers in the game, a do it all Tight End, a 3 time 1,000 yard rusher, and a Super Bowl winning Offensive Lineman. Not bad.

Let’s take a look at some possible gems Atlanta could take a chance on in this years’ draft.
