The Security Blanket

2nd String: Matt Schaub. Age: 35

Many may forget that Schaub was once a talented rookie sitting behind the beloved Michael Vick and turned out to produce a few good years in Houston before returning to Atlanta. Though he has been reaching into his last leg into his career, Schaub still brings more value to the Falcons because of his past experience leading huddles and being able to control the tempo of the offense better than the majority of the rest of the NFL’s backups.

  • Still, many fans overlook the importance of having insurance behind a franchise quarterback and fall too much into the salary that many veteran quarterbacks are valued at by teams across the league. Guys like Schaub are kept around to help lead second-team players into being prepared for when their names are being called, helping the starting quarterback understand the defensive changes throughout a game, and most importantly being available in case of injuries.

Of course I don’t expect Schaub to see much of the 2017 season on the field but there will always be a few games where the game has already been won, giving Schaub the chance to finish out the game.

    2017 Stats Prediction:

31 Passing Yards – 62.5 percent completion rate

    0 Touchdowns – O interceptions
