The Atlanta Falcons placed an incentive in the contract of Dontari Poe that says if he is 340 pounds or less, he is granted a bonus check, Tuesday is a weigh in
In 2016, nose tackle Dontari Poe weighed in at 346 pounds at the start of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs. That season, Poe tallied a total 18 tackles, and had 1.5 sacks on the year.
Incentives
This year however, the Atlanta Falcons placed an incentive on Poe that says if he is 340 pounds or less, by Tuesday, June 13, then he is granted a 125 thousand dollar bonus. The reason for Dan Quinn wanting to reduce Poe’s weight is simply because of his selective and unique play style. Fast and physical. If Poe drops 6 pounds or more, he can be both faster and more physical
Poe’s Take & Its Effect
According to Vaughn McClure of ESPN, Poe claims he isn’t worried about the weigh in. This will not be the only weigh in for the tackle, as he has three more weigh ins, each rewarding $125,000 in incentives. The question is now, does Dontari Poe put up better stats, or worse in regards to his position? Does speed take away power and brute force?
Training camps and OTA’s will truly show if weight loss is the answer for him. Alongside one of the most powerful defensive lines in all of football, this weigh-in can mean more than expected. Maybe he doesn’t perform like his teammates to the right and left of him. For Falcons fans hearing Poe say he isn’t worried, feels like a Christmas morning. Happy, joyous and thankful.
