Roddy White: Future General Manager?
Roddy White, the Falcons All-time leading receiver, may have a future in the NFL in a front office job.
In an interview with ESPN, Roddy White expressed his interest in working in the Falcons front office in the near future and his lack of interest in coaching:
"“I don’t think I can coach, but I would be open to a front office job. I’m not watching over players (as a coach). That job is too hard.”"
While White doesn’t have any experience working in an NFL front office, he may not need it to find success. Some former NFL players currently work as general managers with little prior experience, such as John Lynch. However, he shouldn’t be unseating Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff anytime soon.
Instead, White would fit best as a scout for the Falcons. His knowledge of the game and mentoring of younger teammates show his ability to see potential in developing players.
Also, remember White did not come into the NFL as a star, he had to work on his technique, improving under the guidance of Joe Horn. He knows what it feels like to come into the league unprepared for the change of pace from college, and this insight could prove valuable in finding the best NFL-ready players in comparison to those that will need some time to develop.
However, don’t expect White to be visiting college practices or talking with NFL prospects right away, as he has expressed spending time with his family as his current priority. As time passes and his children age, then he’ll have more time to pursue front office ventures.
Whatever the case, Falcons fans have a special place in their heart for Roddy White, and many would love to see him around the franchise in the future.
