Atlanta Falcons: Bubble watch — TE Eric Saubert
By Randy Gurzi
The Atlanta Falcons bubble watch series continues with a look at tight end Eric Saubert, a rookie who has had some struggles so far in the preseason
Over the course of the last three preseason games, rookie tight end Eric Saubert has been getting a lot of attention. Most of it hasn’t been good. Head coach Dan Quinn has tried to get him involved in as many plays as possible, but he has been getting attention for his failings. Saubert has missed some blocks and gotten some ill-timed penalties called against him as well.
Vitals
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 253-Pounds
Receptions: 4
Yards: 25
The bumps and bruises so far weren’t unexpected for the late-round rookie. The Drake product played in a spread offense and really is an oversized wide receiver that has to learn the tight end position moving forward. His athleticism made him worth the risk though and so far Atlanta has been showing they want to work with him to develop a true tight end. They just can’t get too discouraged by the missed blocks or bad holding calls.
Prediction on Making the Roster
The Falcons drafted Saubert knowing full well that he wasn’t going to be a game-ready tight end from the start. They liked his upside though and it would be crazy to see them go from using a draft pick to secure his services to risking him via waivers.
Next: Atlanta Falcons: Roster bubble watch, wide receiver Reggie Davis
Then again with this being the first season teams cut from 90 down to 53 on the same day, anything is possible. Maybe they feel they can sneak him to the practice squad. Maybe they realize that’s too risky. The final prediction is he makes the final roster as the Dirty Birds want to see this thing all the way through.
