Atlanta Falcons should trade for Forrest Lamp

Injuries are apart of the game and it is important to have depth and the Atlanta Falcons already had two injuries. DL Michael Bennett suffered a broken ankle and S JJ Wilcox tore his ACL.

The Atlanta Falcons signed multiple DL in hopes they can have plenty of competition to fill the roster. For SS the Falcons current plan is to have Kemal Ishmael back up Keanu Neal. While these positional groups are okay for the time being, other positional groups could suffer tremendously if anyone is injured. One of those positional groups is the offensive line.

The Falcons current projected starting offensive line is: LT Jake Matthews, LG Jamon Brown, C Alex Mack, RG Chris Lindstrom, and RT Kaleb McGary. The starting five looks solid but the depth is where fans start to worry. The other depth pieces on the Falcons OL are G Sean Harlow, G Wes Schweitzer, G James Carpenter, G Adam Gettis, G John Wetzel, C Chandler Miller OT Dieugot Joseph, OT Lanard Bonner, OT Jaelin Robinson, OT Matt Gono and OT Ty Sambrailo. Between the depth pieces only four of them will make the 53-man roster.

The four that are most likely going to make the roster are: G James Carpenter, OT Ty Sambrailo, OG Wes Schweitzer, and OT Matt Gono. The Falcons need to trade for a player that could serve as a depth piece because we have seen players from this group struggle before.

The Atlanta Falcons should make a trade for G Forrest Lamp from the Los Angeles Chargers. Lamp has struggled with injuries in his career only playing two games in two seasons. The Falcons are currently stretched thin on cap space, so they must trade for a player on their rookie contract.

Lamp was one of the draft targets for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2017 NFL Draft. The Falcons ended up trading up to select Takkarist Mckinley but Lamp was one of the player the Falcons met with during the draft process.

One of the positives about Lamp is his versatility as the Chargers have him listed as a guard, he played offensive tackle in college and had an impressive performance for Western Kentucky against Alabama. Lamp would be an upgrade over Gono because of his upside and the Falcons could control his contract if he plays at a high level.

The Atlanta Falcons should only trade for Lamp if they can receive him for a 5th or 6th round pick. This is a trade that is low risk and high reward. If Lamp can play well and be an everyday starter at left guard this move would be huge. Lamp being an everyday starter at left guard would also mean four of the five Falcons starting offensive line would be all be 27 years old or younger.
