Atlanta Falcons no longer laughingstock of NFC South
The Atlanta Falcons and the city of Atlanta are no longer the laughingstock of the NFC South, that distinction belongs squarely to the city of New Orleans and the Saints.
There is no denying that blowing a 25-point lead in Super Bowl LI is as embarrassing as it gets in this country most popular sport. The Atlanta Falcons fan base has accepted what they cannot change and have done a great job of moving forward.
New Orleans and the Saints fan base cannot say the same.
Today a Louisiana judge ordered NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and three game officials to give a deposition under oath based on the 2018 NFC Championship game.
What is the point? What does the Saints fan base hope to gain from this? They aren’t going to replay the game, they aren’t going to retroactively award the NFC title to New Orleans and they damn sure are not going to take Tom Brady’s sixth Super Bowl away from him because the Saints players and fan base believe they would have beaten the Patriots.
At least Atlanta did not go this embarrassing route. There were plenty of missed calls in Super Bowl LI, but the Falcons took responsibility for their collapse and no one in the organization ever pointed fingers at Roger Goodell or officiating.
They owned their loss. The Saints could learn something from the Falcons, the fan base certainly could as well.
The Saints fan base has spent seven months blaming Goodell and officiating instead of blaming their quarterback for throwing the game ending interception, the offense for going two for five in the red zone or the defense for giving up the game tying score in the final 87 seconds.
Instead, they have judges demanding that NFL front office executives give a deposition on something that simply does not matter at this point.
If the Saints are as focused on this nonsense as their fan base is, it will be another long season in New Orleans and their back to back playoff appearances will come to an end. Not only are the Falcons the most talented team in the NFC South, but they are also the most focused.
