Atlanta Falcons need to cut the dead weight
By Joe Beasley
The Atlanta Falcons fell short against the Broncos in the Hall Of Fame game. While this was nothing more than a glorified exhibition game, there was one bright spot at quarterback.
Kurt Benkert came out last night and was straight balling. He went 19-35 for 185 yards and threw the only touchdown for the Atlanta Falcons last night. He’s has a lot of zip to his ball and was even mobile enough to scramble when he needed to. He only ran the ball one time but it was for a big gain of 17 yards.
Benkert didn’t make any glaring mistakes you would expect from a young quarterback outside of holding on to the ball too long at times and some over throws, like any quarterback he had some throws he would like to have had back. Benkert did make a high IQ pass in the red zone to Devin Gray in the endzone when he put the ball where only Gray could catch it, which fell complete after Gray failed to adjust to the ball.
Neither quarterback is Matt Ryan and there is no “quarterback controversy” unless you think that Schaub is still the backup. It’s safe to say Benkert has already locked up the 2nd string quarterback spot….and that leads us to the other quarterback, Matt “Scrub” Schaub.
Schaub looked awful against guys who probably won’t even make an NFL roster. With the same offense that Benkert had, he didn’t do anything but do Matt Schaub things, bad passes and an interception to top it off.
The offense seemed somewhat stagnant while he was in the game and didn’t play with the same energy and focus they did while Schaub was in the game and if you can’t motivate your troops as the quarterback then you’re already losing.
The Atlanta Falcons need to cut their dead weight and get Schaub off this roster. By holding on to him, they could hinder the development of a good young quarterback that has a lot of promise. I’m not saying Benkert is the heir apparent to Matt Ryan or the future of the Atlanta Falcons, but I’m much more comfortable with the ball in his hands instead of Matt Schaub if the situation arises.
