Falcons bringing Matt Bryant in for a tryout

The kicking woes for the Atlanta Falcons have not gotten any better after adding Blair Walsh to the mix earlier this week. Former Falcons player Coy Wire stated on twitter that kicker Matt Bryant would be in Flowery Branch Friday to tryout.

Is anyone shocked that the Falcons kicking woes did not improve after bringing in a washed-up kicker who missed all of 2018 as well as 17 kicks in 2016 and 2017?

If you are, you are one of the few.

Falcons kicker, Giorgio Tavecchio, has missed five kicks in total sending the Falcons fan base into a frenzied panic. While there have been a few to take the “it’s only preseason” approach, the missed kicks should alarm everyone.

For the last decade, Matt Bryant has been as good a kicker as you will find across the NFL and he is as automatic as you can ask or in a league where kickers struggle immensely. In 2018, Matt Bryant was 20/21 and his only miss was a 53-yard attempt against the Packers.

With the offense looking to reestablish itself as the most potent in the league, having a kicker of Matt Bryant’s stature and resume is paramount to collect on the drives that potentially stall outside the red zone.

Having a kicker like Matt Bryant “tryout” is equivalent to having a tenured college professor with a Ph.D. as a substitute teacher; it is pointless and embarrassing. When Bryant arrives in Flowery Branch, he will be the best kicker in the state and the Falcons should sign him and be done with the science experiment.

With Super Bowl aspirations, we would like to think that Arthur Blank personally picked up the phone to call Matt Bryant and asked to him come back. While that will never be known for sure, what we do know is Bryant is the only choice at this point and he makes this roster even better than it already is.

Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter says no work out will be needed for Matt Bryant and will actually sign with the Falcons on Friday.
