Falcons can erase a lot of doubt with a win vs the Eagles
By Joe Beasley
The Atlanta Falcons performance against the Vikings was something out of a nightmare, thankfully they have a chance Sunday to move forward.
That might have been the worst total team effort in a football game for the Falcons since the 2012 NFC Wild card game against the Giants when they were on the losing end of a 24 to 2 butt-kicking.
Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong for the Falcons. The three turnovers, the play of the offensive line, and the play of the defense were all not what we expected to see from the Falcons given the strides that were made during the offseason.
Sunday left a sour taste in the mouths of the Falcons faithful but all is not lost. The Falcons have a Sunday night game against the Eagles and if they have any type of backbone, they will show up and show out.
The Eagles are coming a win against the Redskins but Case Keenum got whatever he wanted in the air against them. It’s safe to say the Falcons are a better team right now that the Redskins and they have to prove that when they play the Eagles.
There are some issues that need to be addressed this well for that to happen. The play calling and coaching has to improve immediately. Good play calling and coaching will put the team in the best position to produce.
The offensive line has to get it together.
It was announced that first-round draft pick Chris Lindstrom suffered a broken foot in the loss and, while that does put a hamper on the offensive line, those guys just have to get back to basics and not get pinned down by this Eagles defensive front. If they are able to do that, life will come easy for Matt Ryan and help Devonta Freeman break loose and help to prove his doubters wrong after that awful showing in game one.
The defense has to do better as a whole, especially against the run. Dalvin Cook got what he wanted whenever he wanted on the ground whether it was inside or outside. The Falcons weren’t able to see how effective the pass rush could be because the Vikings didn’t need to throw the football.
Carson Wentz will have a lot of the weapons on the offensive side of the ball for the Eagles, this defense needs to step up to the challenge.
All is not lost for the Falcons this season. Luckily, this is just one game and there are 15 more to go. An excellent showing against the Eagles will go a long way and help get rid of the nasty things that have been said by analysts and fans alike.
If nothing does change before Sunday and the Falcons show up flat again, they might be in for a long season and certain seats might start to get hot.
