Four takeaways from the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night
Devonta Freeman is not the answer. He got the bulk of the carries last night versus the Eagles and did nothing with them. Freeman ended up with 22 yards on 11 carries out of the backfield, he did have three catches for 42 yards, though 28 was on a single throw.
Ito Smith has to be more involved with this offense. Smith had just four carries last night, however, he averaged eight yards per carry and sees the field better than Devonta Freeman does. Smith also had had two catches for 13 yards.
I am not saying that Freeman does not have a place on this roster and will not be able to contribute in some way, shape or form and he may even have a game or two where he looks like he back to his old self, but Smith should be the featured back in this offense.
Dirk Koetter has to be more balanced. Right now Matt Ryan is on pace to have more than 700 passing attempts in 2019. No team has ever made the Super Bowl when their quarterback attempts 600 or more passes during the regular season. Koetter has to make a concerted effort to establish the run and make it easier for everyone involved.
