Dan Quinn’s seat just got hotter than summer in Atlanta

So just how hot is Dan Quinn’s hot seat?

Take the Atlanta heat without the humidity. Maybe Arizona in the summer, which is where they’ll be playing in two weeks? Houston gets pretty hot too, and they make a visit there next week.

But he’ll make it through the season. How often do teams who switch coaches midway through the year actually finish on playoff runs? Here’s the thing. The Falcons have other coaching talent that could step in and lead the team.

Dirk Koetter, Raheem Morris, Greg Knapp- all three viable candidates to lead a team. In fact, some of them have done it before.

Each week, Dan Quinn give his best Pete Caroll impression. But after a while it gets old. Enough of the “we’re pretty pissed” and the “we missed the mark.” Yea, your record tells us that. Stop with the idioms and the proverbs.

Enough with the boxing analogies. Play some football. Put your team in a position to win the game. Put players on the field who won’t commit silly penalties that kill drives.

But coaching is more than that, it’s about knowing your personnel and being honest with what talent you have in the building. And whatever type of defense Quinn is calling, it doesn’t work for the talent the Falcons are putting on the field each week.

Cover 2 worked in Seattle. And as much as he wants to replicate that here, there is a talent gap. It’s a different team. The pass rush in Atlanta doesn’t happen consistently, Isaiah Oliver is a second-year corner still learning how to defend in the NFL, he’s not Richard Sherman and neither is Desmond Trufant.

And the physicality of this team is just different. The Falcons are reluctant to bring pressure and even the most basic game managers under center eat the team alive. Quinn put his future with the team in his own hands when he decided to play call this year while still serving as head coach.

Matt Ryan should not have to be perfect for the Falcons to win. dark. Next

Soon, he’s gotta face the music. There’s no one else to blame this time. The only question is which coach gets the boost first: Jay Gruden or Dan Quinn?
