The Rise and Fall of Vic Beasley
By Joe Beasley
When the Falcons drafted Vic Beasley, everyone saw the raw talent that he possessed. He was dominant in Clemson and that led him to be the 8th overall pick.
During the 2016 season for the Atlanta Falcons, Vic Beasley announced his presence to the NFL with 15.5 sacks and even made his first and only All-Pro team, which is quite an accomplishment with the number of elite pass rushers in the league.
Now he’s been placed on the trading block.
Since the 2016 season, he’s suffered some injuries and became a shadow of himself. Inquiring minds want to know “What Happened to Vic Beasley?”
There is something to be said about players who were blessed with enormous amounts of sheer athleticism. They often depend too much on their athleticism thinking that will always equal success. Well, college athletes aren’t the same kind of athletes he plays every week in the NFL.
His speed off the edge is something remarkable and when he beats his guy, he’s as good as golden. The problem is if his guy is able to neutralize his speed off the edge, what’s his next move?
Beasley was never able to develop that second move and thus the magic of Vic Beasley was no more. In the midst of three seasons, he went from potential elite edge rusher to just another fast guy off the edge.
No one can sit here and say that Beasley doesn’t want to be great no one knows that for sure. Does anyone know if the coaching staff took the time to help him develop? Coaching has been an issue for the Falcons ever since the infamous 28-3 collapse so some of the blame could fall on them.
It’s not fair to say the Vic Beasley was a waste of talent, but after the 2016 season, it’s hard not to think “what if” when it comes to Beasley.
What if the developed more as an edge rusher?
How would this defense look if he reached his potential?
The quick rise and quick fall of Vic Beasley is a sad story indeed. Hopefully, the Falcons can send him somewhere and the change of scenery would do him some good and he can reach that untapped potential that he possesses.
