Atlanta Falcons need to start rookies, bench veterans
By Matt Siegman
The Atlanta Falcons fall to 1-6 on the year after getting curved stomp by the Los Angeles Rams in a 37-10 blowout. This is the worst season in the Matt Ryan era, and it is an all-time low for the organization.
The Atlanta Falcons season is lost, and it is inevitable Dan Quinn will not be the head coach for the Falcons during the 2020 season.
The Atlanta Falcons had playoff expectations to start the year with Deion Jones and Keanu Neal coming back from injury. Instead, the Falcons have a historically bad defense and have had three score deficits in every game outside of the Eagles.
This organization has a lot of work to do if they want to reach the Super Bowl with Matt Ryan and Julio Jones on the roster. There is a lot they cannot control until after the season but what they can control right now is who is on the field and who is on the bench. The Atlanta Falcons need to start rookies and young players that are going to be with this team for the foreseeable future.
One name that pops out right away is rookie defensive end, John Cominsky. Cominsky has shown flashes of his limited playtime during the season and in the preseason. He could be a huge part of the defense moving forward as a rotational piece across the defensive line. Vic Beasley will hopefully be traded soon and Takkarist McKinley has been a disappointment this season.
Kendall Sheffield and Jordan Miller are two rookie corners that need more playing time. Desmond Trufant continues to have his ups and downs. At times he looks like Richard Sherman when he was with the Seahawks and at other times, he looks like Bene Benwikere trying to cover Julio Jones. Isaiah Oliver has also been a major disappointment and needs to share playing time with Sheffield and Miller.
Deadrin Senat is another player that needs more playing time for the Falcons. He had a decent rookie year and could continue to develop with more opportunities. With Tyeler Davison and Jack Crawford set to become free agents, Senat needs all the playing time he can get.
The last player that needs more playing time is running back Qadree Ollison. The Atlanta Falcons drafted Ollison to be a power back for the Falcons and they need one with Devonta Freeman and Ito Smith being on the smaller size. Freeman is likely going to be the June 1st cut and the Falcons need to see what they have in Ollison.
