Lots of positives for Atlanta Falcons in win against the Saints
By Joe Beasley
What a difference a week makes especially on defense.
All the things the Atlanta Falcons didn’t do well the first half of the season, they did very well against the Saints. If this team continues to perform like this, this might give the fan base some type of hope going forward and could carry on into the next year whether by the grace of god Dan Quinn is the head coach or not.
The defense came out gun blazing against the Saints offense. One of the big reasons why is the Saints we’re unable to get things started of offense is due to the play of the Falcons defensive line.
The defense sacked Drew Brees six times and Brees was never able to get into a groove. Brees was rattled in the pocket all day.
Another big thing the Falcons did which is something that doesn’t show up on the scoreboard is solid tackling.
There have been times during the first half of the season when the Falcons defenders tried to go for the big hit just to have the opposing player bounce and gain more yards.
Today, the Atlanta Falcons defense wrapped up and didn’t allow the Saints to turn short-yardage plays into big plays. It’s amazing what solid tackling can do for a defense.
With the pass rush performing the best it has all season, the pass defense was stellar as well. Yes, Brees still ending up passing for 287 yards and Thomas did have 152 receiving yards and quite a bit of those yards came on the last offensive drive of the game.
As a whole, this defense performance is not only the best so far this season but one of the best in recent memory. They didn’t shoot themselves in the foot with foolish penalties and didn’t allow a touchdown to the high powered Saints. Let’s see if they can keep this up.
