Colin Kaepernick could provide wrinkles the Atlanta Falcons don’t have
By Joe Beasley
The Atlanta Falcons traded away Mohamed Sanu to the Patriots during the season but he was way more than a receiver.
There have been clips of the former Atlanta Falcons receiver punting in practice during the season and was used in the wildcat formation not only because of his speed but also because he can throw the football.
That wrinkle in the offense hasn’t been seen in some time and every now and then it would be a good chance of pace play as well as something to keep the opposing defense off guard. Now that Sanu is gone who can fill that void?
This is not a “Kaepernick should replace Matt Ryan” article, it’s just an idea that could help the Falcons offense. Having an actual quarterback, in this case, would rid the defense of assuming that the Wildcat will be a running play.
The Falcons are slated to be one of the known teams to attend the workout of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and since this season is practically a wash, why not give him a chance?
Falcons fans are split in regards to welcoming him to the franchise and that’s fine. People will quickly pull up his passing numbers and the fact that he got benched while in San Francisco, though he would end up getting his starting spot back and threw for 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions in his last season.
What they won’t bring up is how those same 49ers with Kaepernick at quarterback, came to Atlanta and booted the Falcons right out the playoffs to book their trip to the Super Bowl or how in his last season with the franchise he was voted as the winner of the Eshmont Award “teammate of the year” an award that Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Steve Young all won during their careers.
With Kaepernick at quarterback for the wildcat and also having Matt Ryan on the field as well gives the Atlanta Falcons offense different looks. A double pass play, a read option, etc. the possibilities would be endless.
The best example would be to look at how the New Orleans Saints use Taysom Hill in their offense. Just last week, the Ravens ran an option play with Robert Griffin III and Lamar Jackson. It’s wrinkle like those that can have a defense clueless and could also provide a spark, especially for the Falcons since the run game has been somewhat nonexistent.
Of course, all of this depends on if Kaepernick would be willing to take on that kind of roll. If he’s so desperate to get back into the NFL, I wouldn’t see a problem with giving him a chance.
Fans worry about the distraction and media attention signing Kaepernick would bring with his past, however, Atlanta is one of the few cities that this would not be as big an issue in. If fans are truly all about winning in sports and he can help this franchise win, why not?
Fans are always wanting media to “stick to sports” well, they should do the same. From a football aspect, he could potentially help this team in several ways.
In reality, what Kaepernick did was a distraction because people allowed it to be and this doesn’t hold a candle to what other athletes in the NFL have done.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has had not one but two sexual assault accusations placed against him. Ray Rice hasn’t seen the football field ever since the incident that involved him and his fiancé. What Kaepernick did comes nowhere close to what many NFL players have done or have been accused of.
This isn’t a life or death situation for the Atlanta Falcons. Having Kaepernick on or off their roster doesn’t help their playoff chances, but if the team is building towards next year and trying to figure things out, then why not see what Kaepernick can do for your team.
