Julio Jones is the quietest superstar ever and people need to listen
Julio Jones is the most unappreciated superstar the sports world has ever seen. It might seem a bit dramatic, but there could not be a truer statement.
For the first time since the 2015 NFL season, Julio Jones has logged multiple multi-touchdown games in the same season. It seems odd given his prowess and the fact that he is the best at what he does, but this is where we are at in regards to Julio’s career.
The man that either owns or will own nearly every receiving record when he finally decides to hang it up is an afterthought simply because he doesn’t catch enough touchdowns.
Seems ridiculous.
Julio is the only player in NFL history to have a five-season streak of at least 1,400 yards receiving. With 250 yards over the final two games of the year, that streak will increase to six consecutive. Texans receiver Deandre Hopkins and Julio Jones are the only two players to actively have six straight years of at least 75 catches.
Yet, we ignore Julio because he does not catch enough touchdowns.
The NFL is putting out their best players of all time in honor of NFL 100 and they put out their wide receivers list earlier this week. Players like Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, and Larry Fitzgerald were all on the list, as they should be. They are all-time great.
However, there was no Julio.
The only player in NFL history to have a five-season streak of at least 1,400 yards receiving, with a real possibility to extend that streak and the NFL’s all-time leader in receiving yards per game was nowhere to be found.
Unlike quarterback or running back, a wide receiver like Julio has no chance at ever winning the MVP award. Holding his lack of touchdown productivity against him is ridiculous. Julio has played with greats such as Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White while also having a quarterback like Matt Ryan who does a great job of spreading the ball around. All of those should be taken into consideration when deciding where Julio stands all-time.
NFL Media has christened Antonio Brown, Hopkins, Odell Beckham Jr, and Michael Thomas as the best in the league, yet the guy that out-produces all of them gets no love.
I hope Julio is able to get his just dues at some point before he retires. It’s a shame that a quiet guy like Julio isn’t appreciated because he isn’t in the media or on social media telling you how great he is.
He lets his play do the talking and it’s time people listened.
