Laquon Treadwell can flourish in this Atlanta Falcons offense
By Joe Beasley
The Atlanta Falcons signed former Ole Miss Standout Laquon Treadwell to a one year deal. The former first-round pick hasn’t done much so far in his career, but signing with Atlanta has put him in an ideal situation.
Playing alongside the Atlanta Falcons dynamic duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should make life easier for Treadwell. He is essentially taking the spot of Mohamed Sanu, which are some big shoes to fill but it’s not impossible. He should be the number three receiver on the team, but Treadwell has number two or even number one receiver talent.
It’s also been proven that playing with Matt Ryan elevates your game. Just look no further than Harry Douglas. Douglas had his one and only 1,000 yards receiving season playing alongside Ryan. Once he left, Douglas was never heard from again. Going from a quarterback such as Kirk Cousins to Matt Ryan is like winning the NFL version of the lottery.
Treadwell’s time at Ole Miss was spectacular. He was a Biletnikoff award finalist, second-team Walter Camp, and third-team All-American. Teaming up with Chad Kelly, Treadwell was apart of the Ole Miss team that knocked off Alabama in 2015.
While Treadwell isn’t the fastest receiver, he does have the ability to be a solid possession receiver for the Falcons. Guys like Anquan Boldin are proof that you don’t need to be the faster or the most athletic guy to be a productive receiver in this league, you just have to be able to go up and get the ball and Treadwell can do that.
The Atlanta Falcons went a different route with this signing. Instead of going after the grizzled veteran, they went after a young receiver who hasn’t had the best start to his career. Between the talent that Treadwell possesses and his hunger to be better, this could end up being a great signing by the Falcons.
