Atlanta Falcons should be favorited to win Sunday

Sunday could finally see the Atlanta Falcons earn their first win of the season.

The Atlanta Falcons will find themselves up against a familiar foe in the Carolina Panthers, who are off to a solid start to the 2020 NFL season.

Through the first four weeks of the season, the Carolina Panthers find themselves sitting at 2-2. For a team who went through a complete overhaul in coaching after last season, has a new starting quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater, and is currently missing their best player in Christian McCaffrey, they are off to a very respectable, dare I say, great start to the season.

The same, however, can’t be said about the Atlanta Falcons.

The team is 0-4 and has looked awful in every game so far this season, with little to no signs of life being shown. The season is all but over, but the team can still play spoiler for the Panthers, a team that the Falcons have dominated.

This is a team the Atlanta Falcons have no problem beating.

Since 2008, the Atlanta Falcons are 16-8 against the Carolina Panthers, with a majority of the losses to them coming between 2013-2015. Other than that stretch of games, the Carolina has had very little luck beating the Falcons.

Taking it back even further than 2008, the Atlanta Falcons are 18-6 in Atlanta since the series started in 1995, which is where Sunday’s game takes place. Carolina hasn’t won in Atlanta since 2014 when they beat the Falcons in embarrassing fashion 34-3 to win the NFC South. Looking at the series as a whole, the Atlanta Falcons hold a 32-18 overall record against Carolina.

It has looked very ugly so far through four weeks, but the Atlanta Falcons love playing the Carolina Panthers, and getting yet another win against their division rivals who are feeling really good about their team right now would be a sweet victory.

There is no love lost between these teams, and a victory over Carolina would show the Panthers that, no matter how bad the Falcons may be, they are still, and always will be, the dominant team in this rivalry.
