Atlanta Falcons will have to make a tough coaching decision
By Ross Terrell
Raheem Morris is going to force the Atlanta Falcons into some tough decisions.
After replacing the winless Dan Quinn, Morris has led the Atlanta Falcons to a 4-2 record and is looking more like he deserves the position.
Yes, you could argue the Falcons should’ve been 5-1 during this stretch, but they did have a flashback to their lead blowing ways against the Detroit Lions. Nobody can knock Quinn in the phrase creativity department.
He talked positively, he had great quips but the team simply wasn’t responding. Morris has put those words into action.
The Falcons have faced no shortage of adversity during Morris’s interim tenure.
Each time he has shown that he can guide this team through murky waters. The Falcons have had to close their facility multiple times due to COVID-19. They did so his first week on the job and Morris led them to a win on the road – their first of the season.
They had to close the facility this week and he leads the team to their most dominant performance of the season.
The Atlanta Falcons were also coming off a listless loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Matt Ryan was sacked eight times, threw two picks, and the defense let Taysom Hill have a heck of a debut. This week against the Las Vegas Raiders? They looked like a completely different team. They held the Raiders to six points on two field goals, forced five turnovers, and put up 43 points — a season-high.
The most frustrating part of it all, is what if Arthur Blank made the move sooner to get rid of Quinn?
The Falcons could, at the very least, be clamoring for a playoff spot with the expanded format. But Raheem Morris is putting together one hell of a highlight reel to make his case as the Falcon’s next full-time head coach.
The parts haven’t changed, he’s just doing a successful job coaching.
The Falcons front office should be excited. With an infusion of more talent, a new offensive coordinator, and the tandem of Morris and Jeff Ulbrich, the Falcons may be able to capitalize on the soon to be a power vacuum in the NFC South.
If Matt Ryan uses this offseason to reinvent his game and Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley can stay healthy, the Falcons may have a reason to be thinking championship next year.
